Welcome to this week’s episode of the Retirement Readiness podcast, where today, we’re working out at Orangetheory Fitness.

Katie Umland, Head of Marketing at PrairieView Wealth Partners (0:18)
Hi, welcome to this week’s episode of the Retirement Readiness podcast. I’m here with Mo Curry at Orangetheory Fitness at the new Lenox location. Hi, Mo! Thanks so much for hosting. I thought maybe we could just start with giving us a little explanation of what is Orangetheory Fitness is in general. And then we can we can dive in.

Mo Curry, Lead Coach at Orangetheory Fitness  (0:39)
Yeah. So Orangetheory is an interval-based workout on the treadmill – strengthen functional movement on the floor. It’s called Orangetheory because we based off of epoch, which is excess post exercise, oxygen consumption. It’s a mouthful. So it’s based off of a “splat” point system. And every minute that you accumulate at 84% of your max heart rate, you earn a splat, which all of this sounds a little confusing, which is why we make it user-friendly with our workouts here.

So, if you get 12 or more splats, the theory is you get into this epoch, which is like oxygen debt. So think about if you were to drive a vehicle, and your car gets warm after you turn off the engine, that’s your body staying warm afterwards, continuing to burn calories and continuing to work for you. So that’s what Orangetheory is. Every workout’s based to get you into those levels, which hopefully over time, will create higher VO₂ to reduce the risk of heart disease. All that good stuff. We want you to stay healthy. And it’s a really fun experience.

Katie Umland, Head of Marketing at PrairieView Wealth Partners  (1:42)
So Orangetheory isn’t just a gym. It’s class-based?

Mo Curry, Lead Coach at Orangetheory Fitness  (1:47)
Yeah, it’s class-based. We recommend that people do book classes in advance. That also helps you stay accountable. But with that being said, we do offer a variety of classes. We have our basic class, which is our Orange 60 (30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of strength and functional movement). And then we have new classes like 90 minutes and the 45 as well.

Katie Umland, Head of Marketing at PrairieView Wealth Partners  (2:09)
So you might be thinking, “Why are we here at Orangetheory?” So the whole premise of the show is retirement readiness. So we wanted to come to Orangetheory today. So far, in this this series, we’ve been talking about financial wellness. But there’s also many pieces that go into that  – health and wellness being one of them. So you might be monetarily ready to retire, but maybe you also have different goals. You want to stay active so you can keep up with your grandkids. You want to interact with your grandkids, maybe take a class with your granddaughter, your grandson here at Orangetheory or somewhere else. So that’s kind of why we are here today – to talk about the health side of retiring and why that might be something that you might want to start thinking about now before before you get there.

I know I started working out at Orangetheory. Tim works out at Orangetheory. We always say his wife is like the Orangetheory ambassador because she really enjoys it. I know I personally got started back at the gym after COVID. Before COVID, I was pretty avid and then COVID hit and I had to kind of rethink about “Okay, how am I going to start staying active?” And now that we’re back in the gyms again, I’m back in the gym. So for somebody who is maybe on that same trajectory of “Hey, I haven’t worked out maybe ever or in the last two or three years.” What is that experience like for them here? Help ease their minds that you can still start working out today even, if you maybe haven’t before.

Mo Curry, Lead Coach at Orangetheory Fitness  (3:57)
Yeah, absolutely. So I think the best example of that is Ellen Latham, who is the co-founder and creator of Orangetheory. She started this in her basement after years of being in the fitness industry, and she built “Ellen’s total ultimate workout,” which is what Orangetheory is known as today. She’s still very involved with the company. But what she says best is, “It’s the multivitamin.” It gives you everything at once.

And the best part about Orangetheory is you could have someone that hasn’t worked out in years or maybe has never even stepped on the treadmill or held some of these pieces of equipment. And then you can have a collegiate athlete right next to them. These workouts are designed for you, which is why we call us coaches. We’re going to help personally train you. And while the workout is fitness, in a way we’re really designing it for you on a personal level.

Katie Umland, Head of Marketing at PrairieView Wealth Partners  (4:50)
People might not realize when you take a class here, you wear a heart rate monitor. Like you explained, it’s really customizable. If an athlete’s working out next to you, he might be pushing himself in a different way, whereas you can be walking on the treadmill next to him. There is no set “this is what you have to be doing.” You work at your own pace.

Mo Curry, Lead Coach at Orangetheory Fitness  (5:15)
Yeah, we have parameters, especially for our treadmills. And those parameters are going to be based off of three different types of athletes: power walkers, joggers, and runners, all which are very challenging in their own right. So we always say the workouts are what you make of them, and we have this innovative technology so that you can stay on track with your workouts and not over-train or under-train, which is really important for people that maybe haven’t worked out or looking for something that’s a little bit more structured.

Katie Umland, Head of Marketing at PrairieView Wealth Partners  (5:41)
So let’s go out of Orangetheory for a minute. If you were just going to be starting your fitness journey, or maybe you just want to add more movement into your life on a daily basis, and you just want to go outside for a walk every day, that’s hugely important. Hugely impactful. There are super great benefits just to walking outside. You’re the expert, not me, so I’ve heard. But you could take those same principles, as monitoring your heart rates and applying them to just walking outdoors or doing some other things also?

Mo Curry, Lead Coach at Orangetheory Fitness  (6:18)
Yeah! I always say that Orangetheory never reinvented the wheel. I’ve been with Orangetheory in some capacity or another since 2013. I’m with it because I believe in it. At the end of the day, we’re doing what science is based off of. We’re tracking heart rate. We know that right now, science is telling us this amount of minutes in this zone is gonna be the most impactful and the most efficient. We know that four days a week plus is really where people see the most benefit. So, we’re not reinventing the wheel. We believe in more life, in any form. Any way that you can get that is truly how you can benefit the most.

Katie Umland, Head of Marketing at PrairieView Wealth Partners  (6:50)
That “more life” part is exactly what we’re talking about here today. You want to retire, yes, but what are you going to do with that retirement? And are you going to be able to live that life that you really want in retirement? Are you going to be able to keep up with the grandkids? Are you going to be able to travel? And when you’re traveling to New Mexico, are you going to be able to hike while you’re there? Are you going to be able to do those things like you finally have the time to do the things that you didn’t when you were younger? But, are you still going to have the lifestyle to do those things that you you really want? So that can be hugely important.

Mo Curry, Lead Coach at Orangetheory Fitness  (7:27)
Yeah. And the other piece of it is, have you ever heard of the “third home principle?” We all have three places or homes, right? It’s like, going to the bar in Cheers and everyone knows your name. For a lot of people, Orangetheory or a community gym or somewhere where they’re going to have that capacity, especially after retirement, is their third home, or their second home when their second home is no longer their job. So, wherever you can find a sense of community is extremely important, too.

Katie Umland, Head of Marketing at PrairieView Wealth Partners  (7:57)
So, I’m 32, and I work out here. Tim is 40 something, and he works out here. If you are closer to that retirement age, can you expect to be working alongside people also that age? What is the typical age range?

Mo Curry, Lead Coach at Orangetheory Fitness  (8:14)
Yeah, it definitely changes in suburbs and cities. I would say, in the southwest suburbs, specifically, our our primary customers are in that mid-40 plus range. But we do have a lot of those folks that are older or even retired. And it’s not only cool, but also motivating to see all different walks of life come into Orangetheory.

Katie Umland, Head of Marketing at PrairieView Wealth Partners  (8:42)
I know outside of Orangetheory, you also ran the Chicago Marathon. I heard that you run at different local events, too, like Old Plank trail runs and you do things outside of the gym. So it’s not Orangetheory or die. You know, there are plenty of other ways that you can you can implement this in your daily life.

Mo Curry, Lead Coach at Orangetheory Fitness  (9:07)
Absolutely. And I I think that if you don’t know how to implement it, going somewhere is a helpful place to start. Even if that means that it’s going to lead to other things like taking those longer walks or getting involved with your first 5k, it all has to start somewhere and sometimes you do need extra guidance.
